Middle School (Ages 11-14)
Middle school marks the transition to serious secondary education. Students deepen their Dutch language skills and begin with literature and history.
- Ages: 11-14 years (6ème through 3ème)
- 5-6 hours of Dutch per week
- Dutch language AND literature
- History/geography in Dutch
- Preparation for DNB-OI exam
The program
In middle school, students follow a comprehensive program consisting of Dutch language and literature, plus a geography/history component in Dutch (DNL - Discipline Non Linguistique).
The middle school program prepares students for the DNB-OI (Diplôme National du Brevet – Option Internationale), a recognized diploma that confirms their international education.

DNB-OI: The brevet with international option
At the end of 3ème, students take the DNB-OI. This exam includes Dutch components alongside the standard French brevet:
- Written exam in Dutch language and literature
- Oral exam on a literary work
- History/geography exam in Dutch
The DNB-OI is recognized and valued. It demonstrates that students have achieved a high level of Dutch.
Literature program
Students read a varied program of Dutch and Flemish literature:
- Modern youth literature (Kuijer, Dragt, Noordervliet)
- Classic works (Anne Frank, Multatuli introductions)
- Flemish authors (Terlouw, De Cock)
- Poetry and drama
Cultural activities
- Annual study trip to the Netherlands or Flanders
- Theater visits and author readings
- Participation in Dutch debate competitions
- Literary evening (annual event)
Student experience
The transition from the Netherlands to France went very smoothly. I made many new friends right away and by Christmas I could already speak French quite well. It's really cool to be in class with children from so many different countries and also follow Dutch education.
